How One Man’s Prayers Led to a Two Million Copy Book Deal

He opened a book publishing business with the little capital he could afford then. He was only able to publish 1000 (one thousand copies of this particular book. After its production, he began to market it.

The first approaches he made were fruitless. he had made approaches to about four avenues which all turned down his advances. He was frustrated and felt very disappointed. He gave himself a break as he still considered what other marketing strategy to apply in order to sell off and recover his money.

Meanwhile, he never stopped applying his usual weapon: Man PRAYER; with the daily Rosary, backed up by frequent attendance of masses, as his strongest weapon. He held very strongly to these prayers.

One day, one of the people he had approached earlier who refused to buy his book called him on the phone, through the use of his telephone number which was printed on that book. She had changed her mind and asked him to supply 100 (one hundred) copies to her office. He heaved a sigh of relief and wasted no time to deliver the books to her. This sale encouraged him to further continue his efforts to market this new book.

The next contact he made is the principal focus of this story, for the response he got from this next contact threw him off his senses. He tried hard to stabilize his senses in an effort to convince himself that this was not happening in his sleep as a dream but in real life.

He knows that he had on a few occasions experienced certain good and exciting things in his dreams only to be disappointed upon waking up to discover that it was all happening in his sleep and not in real life. So, this one put him in that state of mind momentarily. He tried to make sure and reassure himself that this was happening in real life and not in his dream.

A Small Publisher’s Journey to Supply Two Million Copies

On one of the days he had gone to see if the response to his marketing approach was ready, a top officer of the establishment who had been holding meetings with the Chief executive on his book finally walked out from the Chief Executive’s Office holding the sample copy of that book in his hand. This made him realize that they had been discussing his book in their meeting. He was walking towards his office, and he followed him. As soon as they entered his office, he whispered to him that they were going to buy two million copies (2,000,000). As if he did not hear properly, he begged him to repeat what he just told him. He repeated it. TWO MILLION COPIES. At this, he felt some sensation in his brain. Perhaps he was trying to faint with surprise. He left his office still full of wonder at this type of news. As he drove home from that office, he kept repeating the words; “Two million copies” At a stage, a thought came to him this way: “Suppose this man was merely joking!” he queried in his confused mind.” But how could such a highly placed officer crack such a joke? I was never his friend or colleague. There was no reason for him to crack such a joke. Besides, there was every seriousness on his face when he mentioned that figure. So, I had no reason to doubt him; ”he concluded.

Unbelievable Breakthrough:

He waited for some days and went back to that office to see whether there was any official response for him with regard to what he was told. There was. An official letter was handed over to him containing this request to supply two million copies of his book. The letter mentioned the title of the book and the amount at which the book was to be sold per copy. The price he gave for the book was considered good and accepted without any reduction. This completely sealed off every doubt and confirmed the business. In a flash, he multiplied 2 million by the profit he was making per copy and knew how much to make from this book as soon as he was able to deliver the two million copies. “ This is unbelievable” he kept repeating to himself as he went back home, full of joy and clutching the letter in his hand full of excitement.

Incredible Blessing:

In the whole wide world, I have never heard of any young publishing company, just started, and the first outings made fetched an order to supply two million copies of its book. God has singled him out for this unheard-of and unusual blessing: starting him off with such a huge sum of money just like that. Our most loving Almighty Father in heaven, from whom all good things come, has singled him out again for this special favor because of his unmerited love for him,  and the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary for him. Thousands of publishing companies exist all over the world. I do not know if any of them has had this type of experience of being given a letter soon after the commencement of business to supply two million copies of their book. He says that he has never stopped wondering why these things are happening to him, and says that he only attributes it to God’s love and the prayers of the  Blessed Virgin Mary to whom he has a life-long devotion and whose Rosary he prays every day.

 The one thousand copies he printed gulped almost every savings he had. Now, he has an offer to supply 2 million copies which is expected to gulp several millions of naira to produce. He revealed that when this thought came up it almost put an end to the jubilation brought by the letter that was given to him. Thoughts like this popped up in his mind: “How do I solve this problem?  I am one of those who hate the idea of borrowing money, even from the bank, but even if I liked the idea, who would lend me that kind of money? Even if I decided that I would approach the bank for assistance, which bank would give out several millions of naira as a loan without any collateral? I did not have any landed property except my little house in my village.”

As he pondered over this huge financial problem which suddenly assumed a colossal one with its attendant killjoy to his newfound happiness, this idea filtered into his brain. “I must approach some giant publishing companies and present my problem to them and see whether they would look at the profit they would make by printing two million copies of a book and decide to invest in me. I must make it very clear to them that I do not have any money at all, and could only pay after the supply was made and money paid to me.’’

I will make it clear to them that I had hoped that I would be given some advance payment as mobilization but was grossly disappointed when I was told that I would not receive any such advance payment. The policy there is that payment is only made after the goods have been delivered;” he concluded his thoughts in this way.

His first thought went to a big publishing company owned by a big politician in Nigeria who was widely known and admired for his philanthropy. Among his philanthropic activities was the establishment of post-primary schools where indigent students are admitted and trained without paying any fees whatsoever. They are transported, fed, and clothed free of charge.

He had a friend who owned a payloader and who had done some jobs with his payloader for this big man. He had in the process become acquainted with him and promised to take him to him any time he came to visit from Abuja where he lived.

While waiting for the big man to come from Abuja, he decided to go to his printing company to present his book with a view to finding out how much it would normally cost them to produce it.

A Publishing Miracle:

On his arrival, he met the manager of the company and merely presented the book as if he had money to pay for its printing. He knew that there was no need to tell him the story of his predicament since the decision to print it free for him could only be made by the chief executive who owns the enterprise. He took the book from him for costing and asked him to come the next day for the reply, which he complied with and so got an idea of what it would cost the company to print it.

Although the money quoted was very big, he knew that the owner of the business was by far bigger than that amount and could afford to spend it on him if the Lord blessed him with winning his favor when his request would finally be made to him.

Meanwhile, his friend had gone to the big man’s house in town to beg his steward to alert him whenever the master arrived in town. He left him his telephone number to enable him to call him. His previous visits to the big man’s house while working for him had brought him closer to the steward.

One day he learned from the news over the radio that the big man was in town to attend some function. He got in touch with his friend and told him what he had heard in the news. They were surprised that the steward did not phone as was agreed upon. However, they decided to go to his house the next day to see whether he was still in town.

They both drove straight from the church after morning mass, to the man’s house in an effort to meet him before his activities for the day would commence. Upon their arrival, they were told that he had gone back to Abuja the previous evening. He felt very disappointed and punctured.

Miraculous Turnaround:

Since nobody knew how long it would take before another visit, he decided to try another big establishment which he had also thought of and considered as another place where he could try his luck in being accepted without making any payment.

When he met the head of this organization and narrated his story, he stunned him with the way he responded to his request: he simply accepted the book from him and assured him that the company was going to do everything to produce the books free of charge and deliver to him and wait to be paid after he had made his supplies and received payment.

“The wonderful Lord has done it again”; he soliloquized. “He has done it again! Here is another dream-like reality happening. Another miracle indeed. Which of these two miracles is greater? None, I believe. The first one in which I was given a letter asking for the production of two million copies of my book is as stupendous as this one in which a big printing and publishing company accepts to print the books for me without my making any financial commitment.

The Power of Faith:

Perhaps the church where I worship contributed to making this possible because the boss of this organization said he knows me very well and sees me often in church. I also know him and see him in church, but apart from this casual acquaintance there was nothing else to hold on to as to why he decided to take such a big risk with me apart from the power and mercy of God and the kind intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our mother, who very easily makes Jesus act, even in very difficult circumstances;” thus he ended his soliloquizing.

As I write this story, the first consignment of this book has been printed and delivered to him by this company. He has carried it to those that requested it, and they have received it and paid him for it without any waste of time. He has also gone back to his benefactors who printed the books and paid them what they charged for the books, and they are all happy and give all glory to God who made all these possible.
