New VW Tiguan vs Chery Tiggo 8 Pro vs Kia Sportage – Family Car Category Comparison #CarsAwards

The 2025 Cars.co.za Awards, sponsored by Absa, are in full swing! 39 finalists have been selected and thoroughly tested by our 20 judges. Represented in 13 categories across a wide spectrum of pricing and segments, the Cars.co.za Awards are by far the most comprehensive car awards in South Africa.

While the finalists will be announced at our Gala Awards Evening on the 28th of February 2025, we filmed 13 comparison tests across our categories with four motoring journalists.

In this film, Ciro De Siena tackles the Family Car Category, where the finalists include the new Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4TSI R-Line, Kia Sportage 1.6 CRDi GT Line Plus and the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max 2.0TGDi 390T Executive AWD.

While we wait for the winner to be announced, Ciro De Siena conducts an in-depth test of all three cars back-to-back at the Gerotek Test Facility, and gives us our opinion on which one he would take home.

  1. i guess i got the bad chery tiggo 8 pro max.. the seats got torn within a year.. and engine light comes on most of the time especially when you full throttle trying to overtake.. yesterday I opened the sunroof, then it started shaking and making weird noses. I bought the Car last year October when they first arrived and I am on 4000km, I went to cape twice with it from Durban, I also drove to Eastern Cape several times.. But I am really not happy, and it is under warranty but I a not getting help, the seats are getting terrible. I do not want to lie I enjoy the car but the frustration, I think its not worth it. You keep talking about Chery's comfort, eish, ayy I do not know about that BUT ONE THINK I CAN TELL YOU I AM STARTING TO REGRET BIG TIME.. I WISH I COULD SHARE PICTURES SO YOU CAN SEE FOR YOURSELVES

  2. The Chinese are clever in limiting you to 3 trims and all they have to worry about is the different colour. Optional extras should be for like special items not everyday things. I think Ciro needs to get a different pram to test.

  3. VW Touareg (2017) to Chery Tiggo 8 AWD and very satisfied indeed ! Impressive performance and ride quality and comfortable as can be …not so much with fuel consumption though…
It really is a high tech car and takes a while to get familiar with all the features and buttons that defers from German cars
After sales services top notch at my local dealer
    Very happy customer !!
Great review Chiro like always ….just one thing you’ve got wrong is that the Chery does come with Adaptive cruise control

  4. VW and the other Germans are going to lose so much market share worldwide if they persist with the options….
    Make it simple….base, medium , top spec….done.
Buying a VW is always a compromise….you can never get the model you need , in the colour you need , speced as you wish……
I have bought plenty and there is almost always a compromise….

  5. For me, the Tiguan in the R-Line variant is the best-looking car. It's a shame that all the features need to be bought. Also, the boot capacity rating is with the rear seats all the way forward, which is also quite silly. Rear USB charging ports are also an optional extra, which is an absolute scam at that price point.

If only the Tiggo 8 Pro Max came in a black interior option for the 2.0L engine I would rather go for that, but being 30 years old I am just not ready for a cigar lounge interior. Other than that it is by far the best car for the money in this category.

The Kia looks like a great car, but I am not a fan of the triangular design themes.
