A few months ago, we had the pleasure of reviewing the fully electric version of BMW’s all-new eighth-generation 5 Series sedan, the BMW i5. However, BMW understands that not everyone is ready to embrace the electric vehicle (EV) movement just yet. Therefore, the brand has wisely maintained internal combustion engines as part of the 5 Series lineup. This week, we turned our attention to the 2024 BMW 530i xDrive to see how it measures up against its electric counterpart.
Performance Overview
Engine Specifications
Under the hood of the 2024 BMW 530i xDrive lies a familiar 2.0-liter inline-four turbocharged engine that now produces 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This marks an increase of 7 horsepower and 38 lb-ft compared to the previous model. For those seeking even more power, the 540i features a 3.0-liter inline-six that has been boosted by 40 horsepower, now reaching a robust 375 horsepower.
Both models are equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and while the xDrive all-wheel-drive system is standard in the 540i, it’s an optional feature in the 530i. Our 530i tester was fitted with the xDrive system, allowing it to deliver a powerful performance at the Mason Dixon test track.
Acceleration and Handling
The 530i proved to be quite capable, achieving 0 to 60 mph in a respectable 6 seconds. For reference, the electric i5 managed this feat in just 3.3 seconds. While the initial surge of acceleration in the 530i was impressive, it did taper off slightly, ultimately completing the quarter-mile in 14.4 seconds at 97 mph. The automatic gear changes were quick and seamless, contributing to a dynamic driving experience.
BMW also includes a Sport Boost function, which is activated by holding the left shift paddle. While it doesn’t provide extra power, it optimizes the vehicle’s settings for maximum acceleration, enhancing the driving experience.
Exceptional Handling
The handling of the 530i was described as fantastic by our test drivers, who appreciated its remarkable balance and minimal body roll. The quick turn-ins and phenomenal feedback made them feel like active participants in the driving process, rather than mere passengers. In contrast, while the i5 EV also handled well, its additional weight—approximately 1,000 lbs—made it feel less responsive to driver input.
The 530i performed admirably in braking tests, stopping from 60 mph in just 100 feet with minimal nose dive and no drama. Its braking performance was similar to that of the i5, reinforcing BMW’s reputation for engineering excellence.
Design and Interior Features
Exterior Styling
The styling of BMW’s vehicles often sparks debate, and the new 5 Series is no exception. However, we believe it strikes a perfect balance—neither as aggressive as the 3 Series nor as stately as the 7 Series. The 5 Series retains its own unique take on BMW’s design language, including modern kidney grilles and sleek lines.
The M Sport package adds larger air intakes, side skirts, and abundant black trim, while the optional 21-inch wheels enhance its sporty appearance.
Interior Comfort and Technology
Inside, the BMW 530i impresses with a frameless curved display that merges a 12.3-inch driver information screen with a 14.9-inch control display. This advanced interface allows for touch inputs or operation via the iDrive controller. Most manual controls have been transitioned to touch-sensitive surfaces, but a prominent volume dial remains, providing a tactile experience that drivers appreciate.
Additional features include:
- Wireless phone charging
- Multiple connection options
- An available Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound system
- The new Vaganza leather-free upholstery, used liberally throughout the interior
Rear Seat Comfort
The rear seat of the 530i offers ample space and exceptional comfort, making it suitable for long journeys. Importantly, the addition of all-wheel drive does not compromise rear-seat space or comfort.
Fuel Efficiency and Environmental Impact
The 530i boasts competitive fuel economy ratings of 27 MPG in the city, 35 MPG on the highway, and 30 MPG combined. During our testing, we achieved an average of 31.2 MPG using premium fuel. This performance translates to an annual usage of 9.9 barrels of oil and 4.8 tons of CO2 emissions, resulting in a slightly better-than-average energy impact score.
Pricing and Options
The pricing for the 2024 BMW 530i begins at $58,895, approximately $9,000 less than the i5. Adding all-wheel drive raises the price to $61,900, while the more powerful 540i starts at $65,895.
Model | Starting Price | Engine | Horsepower | Torque | Fuel Economy (City/Highway/Combined) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
530i | $58,895 | 2.0L I4 Turbo | 255 hp | 295 lb-ft | 27/35/30 |
530i xDrive | $61,900 | 2.0L I4 Turbo | 255 hp | 295 lb-ft | 27/35/30 |
540i | $65,895 | 3.0L I6 Turbo | 375 hp | 369 lb-ft | 26/34/29 |
540i xDrive | TBD | 3.0L I6 Turbo | 375 hp | 369 lb-ft | TBD |
Conclusion
The 2024 BMW 530i xDrive is a testament to BMW’s commitment to providing a superior driving experience. With its combination of luxury, technology, and performance, the 530i stands out in the competitive mid-size sedan segment.
Whether you opt for the internal combustion engine or the fully electric i5, the choice is clear: you can enjoy an exceptional driving experience with the 5 Series lineup. The fact that BMW offers two powertrain options, both of which deliver thrilling performance, makes the new 5 Series a standout choice for discerning drivers.
